“Different” - what it really means to some people…

January 12, 2006

Let’s say you picked up a lifestyle magazine straight off from the rack one day. Maybe you’ll just look at the cover, maybe you’ll flip through the whole mag, looking for something worthwhile to read. Maybe the article that caught your eye is something called “Im different, but Im happy.”

Chances are, one wouldnt think twice about the title.

We live in a society where too many things and too many people are labelled as “different”. In some ways Different is good - it makes u stop and look, it makes u think further, it makes you wonder why its different, how its different and so on and so forth.

In other ways, different is bad. Different makes you wary. Different is the adjective that makes you stare longer than usual. It makes you stay away, shun…discriminate.

Everyone discriminates…even me. It cant be avoided…its human nature. Because discrimination in its purest form is the realisation that something or someone is different.

So do i want to perpetuate that label “Different” expecially when it comes to people who just want to live their lives with no big hoo-haa?

No, I dont.

So, the next time u see someone who is Different and want to go up to say something which YOU THINK is actually complimentary ie. “You are different, but dont worry, you look good. You should be happy.” Don’t do it. What about the other people who are ALSO different but dun look so good then?

There do exist people who arent into putting labels on themselves, and especially on other people.

btw, IMO “Im different but Im happy” is a stupid title for an article.
Cos, why should someone be anything but happy even tthough they are different? Beneath the exterior, beneath all the outside that people see… someone who LOOKs different, is still the same as everybody else on the inside.

The title simply implies that the person who makes that statement is subjecting herself/himself to how society wants to view them - short, tall, fat, skinny, black, white, yellow, red etc.

Now…why in the world, do we want to do that? Isnt it enough that you yourself know what you are without having society dictate to us what they see/think we are?
