Mobility is great

October 9, 2007

I still recall the flickr party i went to last month. Armed with a blackberry and free all i can eat plan, i had been taking pictures and uploading to a flickr account id set up just for that event.

Everybody else were planning to do it the good old fashion way it seemed cos they seemed to blink at my teeny camphone which their huge and largely prosumer SLRs overshadowed.

Come on people, havent you heard of mobile uploads before. I guess they are the serious enthusiast sorts who take time to craft their compositions instead of capturing images on the fly…?

So what does this mean for the laptop users i see here at starbucks? One of them scouts for the power outlet next to me as i type this out now on my berry.

Mobility versus power
Spontaneity versus time-taking crafting

Hmmmm

Ive never had to use my meagre organisational skills this much EVER! (to make sure I dont miss out too many small but important pieces).

I’m fired up.

Microsoft makes another play for Yahoo!

It may seem the logical thing to do (if they are doing it cos Google successfully outbidded them for DoubeleClick) to catch up with Google (what catch up?)… all I know is that the deal goes through, I WILL dump my Yahoo! and MSN accounts and use ONLY Google.

There is no way for both to collaborate further and remain autonomous while maintainining their own respective brands, cos honestly… MS might just overwhelm Yahoo. But, a buy out just wouldnt do it, if its meant to increase shared Internet properties to rival Google’s.

So, what if Google has become the top internet destination? A buy out would hv worse effects than a stupid brand ranking, IMHO. When people go onto a Google property… the average consumer doesn’t even know it belongs to them. They dont really care… should they?

So, their search engine is phenomenal… i use it as a utility… a really useful utility. It’s hardly the social networking tool that consumers like myself have grown used to ie. blogs, photos, vids, music, forums… Where’s the community? I need more than just a really long contacts list on my Gmail app. Localisation - these two have a headstart, Google has only just started… and i dont know how committed it is to getting in touch with the crowds at ground level. (I think Google will be more popular among small biz users than the average person on the street :P ).

But, what do my needs matter? I’m just one in a world of millions of Internet users. At the end of the day, advertising networks and revenue will demand that its numbers that count - not brand loyalty. Or what web users really want.

What does this mean for existing online vid sharing services. Or even Set top box makers?
hardware versus software… at the end of the day…… will broadband speeds pull through.

Update: what a letdown. Someone professes he already has a software that lets him do all that. And he doesnt need to pay cos he cracked it.

Azza says:
i got a freakenomics hypothesis on why 3G take up rate is bad in ASEAN… BAD PUBLIC TRANSPORT

Azza says:
singapore is an exception though because of the size

Azza says:
korea and Japan public transport not bad right.. 3G users are high there right.. workers usually take long train rides into the city to work and back home.. so they got time to use these 3G
MY and TH… public transport so bad better to own a car..
so when they drive, how to use 3G?

Azza says:
singapore execption because the journey from home to office is shorter than that of japan and Korea, doesn’t make sense to go online

cat says:
i can almost believe that.

Actually I do.

Malaysia doesnt have the culture for mobile 3G/Internet. I might say there’s still downloading (music/movies) as opposed to streaming where you dont have to look at screen, but maybe Msians are still iffy about payment mechanics… plus if majority of downloading market are youths (as one telco CEO suggests) majority of youths are pre-paid users - are there payment methods for music/movies downloads which will cater to this segment? And by music downloads, I dont mean short ringtones.

On the subject of mobile data usage, SMS texting isnt the same, and there’s hope Personal IM will be interoperable next year, as the 3GSMA announced.

3G in home broadband space? So far, so good. We’ll see how it goes if WiMAX takes off.

Conniption!

More than anything…

December 7, 2006

Am at friend’s place right now. … the baby in the family is reading up about card tricks on the internet and trying them out on us. After more than adequate loo time, had recovered enough to stuff my face wit Thai food…

More than anything…this time of the year reminds me not of X’mas but another whole year almost gone by.

Would be funny to say that with age…I’ve mellowed. And yet i know that now I know things that I never knew before.
I also touched base with a past aspect of my life, though ive yet to propel forward full steam ahead - I dont want to start a project and find that the things I care about full time, is demanding much more time and energy that i can spare for part time past times. I cant commit…I CANT COMMIT. Not to part time things, no i cant.

There are two websites to look at, one endeavor to look further into… but all at the same time, Im stressing about deadlines cos I think that what Im currently working on deserves so much more thought and attention than usual.

Its that time of the year… a full and detailed round up is so so SO much in order.

And looking at that aspect of my life then and now…i look at the people i used to talk to, and talk to now and i wonder what do they see when they look at me. Can they see how much my life has changed from since then?
My friend the other day was talking about how life had changed for her. How the people who came in and out of her life had made her to be the person she is today.

I’m slowing down. Not that certain pursuits in life are any less important…but theres a whole new approach to things, result of ever growing knowledge of human nature and perception of things and live. How I rebelled and refused to see how things really are.

Friend used to lecture me about certain facts of life… we’ve had different kinds of lives. We see things differently.Different things are important to us…and yet with time and after looking at how life is for my friend I have to say that I might come to yearn for it. Not yet. But maybe in the future for who knows what it holds.
